Winchester P.S.

Toronto Board of Education staff, 1959

The first Winchester P.S. building was constructed in 1874 and renovated in 1917. In 1959, the Toronto Board of Education purchased and demolished neighbouring houses to construct this building and a playground. Such expansion projects were being conducted at the time in neighbourhoods including the Annex and Christie Pits.

The new Winchester building placed classrooms on the first and second floors, off a central corridor; a gymnasium protrudes from one side, slightly off-centre

The school employs several stylistic devices characteristic of the Pennington schools, including a tall chimney with a sculptural form (and, in this case, glazed white and red brick); a staggered grid of coloured metal panels; brightly coloured window spandrels; and a decorative mosaic.
